Making Interactivity Mandatory in PageTiger

In this video tutorial, you'll learn how to use mandatory interactivity in PageTiger to make sure readers engage with key content instead of skipping past it. You'll see how to make a module mandatory, add a custom mandatory message, and require readers to achieve a specific assessment Result, such as a pass, before they can move on.

Mandatory interactivity stops readers moving to the next page until they've engaged with a specific piece of content.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

What's Been Covered:

  • What mandatory interactivity is, and how it confirms that readers have engaged with key content. The tutorial uses a safety video and an end-of-section quiz, but the same approach works with any piece of interactivity, such as a pop-up for accepting terms and conditions.

  • How to make a module mandatory using the Mandatory icon and checkbox, and how to add a custom mandatory message with Edit Message.

  • What readers see if they try to turn the page too early, and what they see if you don't add a message of your own.

  • How to make a specific assessment Result, such as Pass, mandatory, so readers have to achieve it, not just attempt the quiz.

  • Why Max Attempts and Hide Retry Button in the Assessments: Settings palette matter when a Result is mandatory.

INSIGHTS

Making Sure Key Content Isn't Skipped

Some content needs more than a glance. Readers might have to accept terms and conditions, watch an important video or complete an assessment, and you need to know it's been read or completed, not skipped past. Mandatory interactivity handles this. When a piece of interactivity is set as mandatory, readers can't turn to the next page until they've engaged with it. If they try, a pop-up explains what they still need to do.

In this tutorial, we'll set this up in a Health & Safety course. First we'll make a safety video mandatory, then we'll require readers to pass each end-of-section quiz before they can continue. For the full reference, see Mandatory interactivity in the User Guide.

Make a Module Mandatory

Start with the piece of interactivity readers mustn't skip. In this case, that's the Health & Safety course's safety video.

To get started:

  1. Navigate to your document and select the Interactivity tab
  2. Click the piece of interactivity you'd like to make mandatory
  3. Select the Mandatory icon from the flyout menu
  4. Tick the Mandatory checkbox
  5. Click Edit Message and enter the message readers will see if they try to turn the page too early, for example, "Please watch the video."
  6. Click Save

A custom message makes the requirement clearer to readers. If you don't add one, they'll see a predetermined message instead: "Complete the required interactions on this page to continue."

To check it's working, open Version Preview and try to turn the page without watching the video. Your message appears in a pop-up, and you won't be able to move on until you've interacted with the video.

Make an Assessment Result Mandatory

Assessments give you an extra option. As well as making a module mandatory, you can require readers to achieve a specific Result, such as passing a quiz, before they move on. In the Health & Safety course, each section ends with a quiz, and readers must pass it to reach the next section.

To get started:

  1. Click the assessment module
  2. Select the Mandatory icon
  3. Tick the checkbox next to Pass
  4. Click Edit Message next to Pass and enter the message readers will see if they try to move on without passing, for example, "Please pass the quiz to continue."
  5. Click Save

Readers now have to achieve a pass, not just attempt the quiz, before they can move to the next section. To learn more about how Results work, see Assessments: How to add a 'Result'.

Give Readers a Chance to Retry

When a Result like Pass is mandatory, readers who don't achieve it first time need a way to try again. Otherwise, they won't be able to retry or move forward.

With the assessment module selected, open the Settings palette and check two settings:

  • Max Attempts must allow more than one attempt.
  • Hide Retry Button must not be ticked.

For more on both settings, see Assessments: Settings.

To test the whole flow, open Version Preview and complete the quiz with a failing score. When you try to turn the page, your mandatory message appears. Click Retry, complete the quiz with a passing score, and you'll be able to continue to the next section. See Previewing for more on testing your document before it goes live.

Whether readers are accepting terms and conditions or passing each section of a course, mandatory interactivity confirms they've engaged with key content rather than skipping past it.

FAQs

What is mandatory interactivity in PageTiger?

Mandatory interactivity is a setting that stops readers from turning to the next page until they've engaged with a specific piece of interactivity. Use it whenever you need confirmation that something has been read or completed, such as a video, a terms and conditions pop-up or a quiz.

How do I make a module mandatory?

Open your document, select the Interactivity tab and click the module you want to make mandatory. Select the Mandatory icon from the flyout menu, tick the Mandatory checkbox, then click Save.

What happens if a reader tries to turn the page before completing mandatory interactivity?

A pop-up appears with your mandatory message, and the reader can't move on until they've interacted with the module. If you haven't added a custom message, they'll see a predetermined one: "Complete the required interactions on this page to continue."

Do I have to write my own mandatory message?

No, but it's a good idea. Without a custom message, readers see a predetermined message instead. A specific message such as "Please watch the video" makes it clearer what they need to do.

Can I make readers pass a quiz before they continue?

Yes. Click your assessment module, select the Mandatory icon and tick the checkbox next to the Result you want readers to achieve, such as Pass. They'll then need to achieve that Result, not just attempt the quiz, before they can move on. See Mandatory interactivity for more.

Why can't my readers move on after failing a mandatory quiz?

Check the assessment's Max Attempts and Hide Retry Button settings. If Max Attempts allows only one attempt, or Hide Retry Button is ticked, readers who don't achieve the mandatory Result can't retry, and so can't move forward. See Assessments: Settings.

What if a page has more than one mandatory module?

Readers are prompted to complete them in the order they appear on the page: left to right, top to bottom. You can give each module its own mandatory message so readers know exactly what's needed at each step.
