Rewarding Achievement and Unlocking Content with Badges
A Badge is a reward that PageTiger hands out automatically the moment a reader passes an Assessment — and it can also be used to lock a document so it only opens once that Badge has been earned. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to create a Badge, set it to award automatically, and use it to gate access to your next piece of content.
Before You Start
This tutorial assumes you're already comfortable adding modules to your document, including an Assessment — that's what triggers the Badge. If you haven't added interactivity to a document yet, start with How to Add Interactivity to Your PageTiger Document before setting up your Badge.

Automatic Rewards That Unlock What's Next
Put simply, a Badge is an automatic reward: PageTiger hands it out the instant a reader completes an Assessment. You'll most often see Badges used to lock access to further content, or to mark progress through a multi-stage Course — but they're not limited to either of those. Anywhere you want to recognise that someone has reached a milestone, and optionally use that milestone to control what they see next, a Badge can do the job. Badges live under Document Settings, alongside the rest of your document configuration.
Create a Badge
A Badge has to exist before you can attach it to anything, so set one up first.
To get started:
- Click Documents
- Select Settings
- Select Badges
- Click Add
- Enter a name — for example, Leadership Fundamentals – Module 1
- Enter a description (optional)
- Upload a Badge image — this is what your readers will see when they earn it
- Click Save
For the full reference on every field, including image size and expiration options, see Badges: How to create a Badge.
Award the Badge Automatically
With your Badge created, set it to award automatically when a reader passes an Assessment.
To get started:
- Open the document containing your Assessment
- Click the Assessment module and select Edit
- Select the Results tab
- Choose your Badge from the Award Badge dropdown
- Enter your messaging in Result Message — this is what readers see the moment they earn it
The Document containing the Assessment must use Reader Login, Employee Number, or SSO as its Security Rule, so PageTiger can identify who's earned the Badge. You can also drop placeholder tokens like [BADGE_NAME] and [BADGE_IMAGE_100]–[BADGE_IMAGE_500] into your Result Message to display the Badge's name and image automatically — see Badges: How to award a Badge for the full list.
Secure a Document with the Badge
Now for the powerful part: using that Badge to unlock your next piece of content. Say you don't want readers moving on to Module 2 until they've passed Module 1's Assessment — here's how to set that up.
To get started:
- Click Documents
- Select Settings
- Select Security Rules
- Click Add and enter a name
- Select the Reader Login tab and tick Reader Login Required (a Badge can only be used in a Security Rule alongside Reader Login, Employee Number, or SSO, so PageTiger knows who the visitor is before checking their Badges)
- Select the Badge tab
- Choose your Badge from the Add Badge dropdown
- Click Add
Then apply the rule to whichever document should stay locked:
- Open the document
- Select the Security Rules tab
- Choose your new rule from the dropdown
- Click Save
From now on, only readers who've earned the Badge can open it. For more on how Badge security rules work, see Badges: How to secure a document by badge and Security Rules: Badge. If you want the full picture of every Security Rule type, see how to apply a Security Rule to a document.
See It in Action
Once it's set up, the whole flow runs itself. When a reader passes Module 1's Assessment, their Result Message appears straightaway, confirming they've earned the Badge. Module 2 then opens immediately — the Badge does the gatekeeping for you, automatically.
If a reader tries to open Module 2 before they've earned the Badge, PageTiger stops them at the door and lets them know they don't have permission to view the document.
Manage Your Badges
Once your Badges are up and running, click Manage next to any Badge to see everyone it's been awarded to.
To manually expire someone's Badge:
- Tick the checkbox next to their name
- Confirm Expire Now and choose a reason
- Click Review & Apply
This can't be undone, so it's worth double-checking before you confirm. Full detail on expiration reasons and what readers see afterwards is in Badges: Manual Expire.
Whether you're rewarding training milestones or any other achievement, that's everything you need to recognise it — and unlock content with it — using Badges in PageTiger.

FAQs
What is a Badge in PageTiger?
A Badge is a reward that PageTiger awards automatically when a reader completes an Assessment. It can be shown to the reader as confirmation of their achievement, and used to lock other documents until it's been earned.
How do I create a Badge in PageTiger?
Go to Documents, then Settings, then Badges, and click Add. Give it a name, an optional description, and a square image, then save — see Badges: How to create a Badge for full field details.
How do I automatically award a Badge when someone passes an Assessment?
Open the Assessment module on your document, select Edit, go to the Results tab, and choose your Badge from the Award Badge dropdown. The Document must use Reader Login, Employee Number, or SSO as its Security Rule so PageTiger can identify the reader earning it.
Can I use a Badge to lock or restrict access to a document?
Yes. Create a Security Rule that combines a login method — Reader Login, Employee Number, or SSO — with your Badge, then apply that rule to the document you want to protect. Only readers who've earned the Badge will be able to open it.
What happens if a reader tries to open a document without the required Badge?
PageTiger blocks access and shows the reader a message letting them know they don't have permission to view the document, until they've earned the Badge that unlocks it.
Can I revoke or manually expire a Badge?
Yes. Click Manage next to the Badge, tick the reader's name, confirm Expire Now with a reason, and select Review & Apply. This action can't be undone.
Are Badges only for training and L&D content?
No. Badges are demonstrated here with an L&D example — an Assessment gating a training module — but the same mechanics work for recognising and gating access to any content, not just courses.
Which Security Rules can I combine a Badge with?
A Badge can only be used in a Security Rule alongside Reader Login, Employee Number, or SSO, since PageTiger needs to know who the visitor is before it can check which Badges they've earned.
